Topic of the week

Here we will post a "bulletin board" of aerospace current events and topics of interest.

ATREX Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment

Weather permitting in mid-March or early April, NASA will launch 5 rockets in 5 minutes from their Wallops Flight Facility, on Wallops Island VA. The 5 rockets are all sounding (suborbital) rockets carrying pressure, and temperature instruments and chemical dispersant TMA (trimethyl aluminium). The chemicals will be released in an upper airstream to form contrails that will be seen and photographed by people from Vermont to the Carolinas. NASA has 3 different sights to take photos, Wallops Island, Southern New Jersey, and North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Scientists will use this information to calculate the wind speeds and currents at these altitudes which are believed to be in the range of 200-300 mph. A concern also exists about the electrical and ion activity in this region, because of the satellite communication disruptions. For more information and pictures go to www.space.com
